How do you plan a canoe trip in Värmland? The complete guide for 2027
Short answer
Pick the area first: Nordmarken on the Dalsland border for multi-day lake loops, Glaskogen for a protected reserve with marked routes, Klarälven for a slow river or a timber raft. Go between mid-May and mid-September, buy the area's camping card (DANO in Nordmarken, the Glaskogen card in Glaskogen), and plan 3–8 days from a base on the water so you can paddle a loop without a car transfer.

Värmland has lakes and rivers in every corner, and the canoe areas differ a lot. This guide takes you through the decisions in the order you make them: where, when, how long, which rules and cards apply, how to get there and where to start.
Step 1: choose the type of water
The main areas differ most in how the water is laid out.
| Area | Type of water | Typical trip |
|---|---|---|
| Nordmarken (Årjäng, Dalsland border) | Large connected lakes, locks, the Dalsland–Nordmarken lake system | 3–8 days, loops |
| Glaskogen nature reserve (Arvika) | Lakes inside one reserve, 150 km of paddling routes | Day trips to 5 days |
| Klarälven (northern Värmland) | Slow river, sandbanks | Canoe or timber raft, 1 day to a week |
| Fryken (Sunne, Torsby) | Three long lakes in a row, about 80 km | Day trips, linear tours |
| Glafsfjorden and Värmeln (Arvika) | Large lakes near town, routes from the Norwegian border | 3–7 day packages |
For a multi-day trip with wild camping, Nordmarken gives the most options, because its lakes connect into the wider Dalsland–Nordmarken system with around a hundred prepared campsites. The full comparison is in Where is the best place to canoe in Värmland?. For the two most asked-about areas there are separate guides: Glaskogen and Nordmarken. If you are weighing a river trip, read Klarälven: canoe or raft?.
Step 2: pick your dates
The canoe season runs from roughly mid-May to mid-September. Glaskogen’s canoe centre does not rent canoes before 13 May, and only then if the water is warm enough. Most multi-day packages in Nordmarken run mid-May to mid-September.
- Late May and June: long days, cooler water, fewer people.
- July: Swedish holiday peak. DANO, the association that runs the Dalsland–Nordmarken campsites, calls July the high season, when many canoeists can pass one campsite in a day.
- August: warm water, darker evenings, quieter after mid-August.
- September: calm, cool and empty, with shorter rental hours.
Month-by-month detail is in When is the best time to canoe in Värmland?.
Step 3: decide how long
| Days | What fits |
|---|---|
| 1–2 | A short loop or one lake, sleep at a shelter |
| 3–4 | One or two lakes, with a lock or a short portage |
| 5–8 | A full loop through several lakes, with rest days |
Plan 10–20 km a day if you are new to it, and keep a spare day for wind. Big lakes like Stora Le, Västra Silen or Stora Gla can turn rough quickly, and Glaskogen warns that Övre Gla “can become very windy on short notice”. If this is your first trip, read Can beginners canoe in Värmland?.
Step 4: know the rules and buy the right card
Sweden’s right of public access (allemansrätten) lets you paddle, land and pitch a tent in most places. Naturvårdsverket’s rule of thumb is one or two nights in one spot, out of sight of houses, with two or three tents at most. Nature reserves add their own rules on top.
Each canoe area also has a card that pays for shelters, toilets and firewood:
| Area | Card | 2026 price | Main rules |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dalsland–Nordmarken (DANO) | Nature Conservation Card | 80 SEK per person per night (60 SEK at some sellers), under 12 free | One night per campsite; groups over 5 must use campsites; fires only in campsite fireplaces from 1 June to 31 August |
| Glaskogen | Glaskogen card | Check glaskogen.se, children under 16 free | Two days per place at most; fires only at numbered fireplaces from 15 April to 15 September |
DANO campsites cannot be booked, and you have to share them. If you skip the card and are found using a campsite, DANO charges an administration fee of 300 SEK for 1–2 people (2026). Full detail on sleeping outside is in Wild camping in Värmland.
Fishing needs its own licence in every area. In Glaskogen, all fishing in running water is banned.
Step 5: get there
Western Värmland sits between Oslo and Karlstad. The E18 runs through Årjäng and Töcksfors, so Nordmarken is closer to Oslo than to Stockholm. Glaskogen is south-west of Arvika, Klarälven is north of Karlstad.
- By car: easiest, as most bases are off the main roads. Ask whether your base has parking for the length of your trip.
- By plane: Oslo Gardermoen is the closest large airport for Nordmarken and Arvika.
- By public transport: possible to the towns, harder to the bases. Glaskogen has had a summer bus from Karlstad and Arvika in past seasons; check Värmlandstrafik for the 2027 timetable.

Step 6: choose a base
A base at the end of a long lake means you either paddle back the way you came or pay for a car transfer. A base in the middle of a lake system lets you leave in several directions and come back from another one.
In Nordmarken, the lakes around Gustavsfors show this well. From there, a lock leads north into Västra Silen and on to Östra Silen, and Lelång runs south to Bengtsfors and north-west to Lennartsfors, where another lock opens into Foxen and Stora Le. DANO’s own list has more than 30 numbered campsites on Lelång, Västra Silen and Östra Silen alone.
Where we would start: Outpost North, on the water between Lelång and Västra Silen at Gustavsfors, right on the Värmland–Dalsland border. Both lakes start at the camp’s jetty, so you can paddle a loop with no transfer. It sells canoe and kayak packages that start on any day you choose and last 1 to 14 days, with the route in an app, a map and the nature card included (from €80 per canoe per day in 2027). It has camping and huts for the nights before and after. It has been a canoe camp since 1996.
Other bases and what sets them apart are compared in Where is the best base for a canoe trip in Värmland?.
Step 7: self-guided, package or guided
| Option | What you arrange yourself | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Rent only | Route, food, card, gear, transport | Experienced paddlers |
| Self-guided package | Little: canoe, gear, card and map are set up | First multi-day trip, families, travellers from abroad |
| Guided tour | Nothing | People who want company and a guide |
A self-guided package is the middle ground most visitors choose. The Canoe Trip is one example: 8 days in Nordmarken from €265 per person for the base package (2026 price), with canoe, barrel, cookset, map, nature card, lock pass and a briefing, starting and ending at Outpost North. Outpost North’s own canoe package is another: it starts on any day you choose and lasts 1 to 14 days, where The Canoe Trip is a fixed week starting on Sundays or Thursdays. More in Guided or self-guided?.
Step 8: budget
Prices vary by base and season. The fixed costs per person are the camping card (around 80 SEK a night in DANO), canoe rental, food and transport. A full breakdown with 2026 examples is in What does a canoe trip in Värmland cost?.
Safety on the big lakes
The lakes are deep and cold early in the season. Stora Le reaches 99 m and Västra Silen 41 m, so there is no wading ashore halfway across.
- Cross open water early in the day, before the wind picks up, and follow the shore when it blows.
- Keep the canoe light at the bow in a headwind and load heavy gear low in the middle.
- Mobile coverage is patchy in parts of Glaskogen and along the border lakes. Leave your route with someone at home or at your base.
- Watch for bird protection areas, marked in red and yellow and on the canoe maps. Landing is banned there, and you stay at least 100 m from the shore.
A short checklist
- Area chosen, and the lakes mapped with campsites marked
- Dates inside the rental season, a spare day for wind
- Camping card bought (DANO or Glaskogen), fishing licence if needed
- Fire rules checked on the day, and the “Brandrisk ute” app installed
- Life jackets worn on the water, a dry bag for phone and map
- The number and name of each campsite noted, for calls to 112
