When is the best time to canoe in Värmland?

✓ Last checked: · Valid for the 2026–2027 season· 4 min read

Short answer

The best months to canoe in Värmland are June and August. June has the longest days (about 18.5 hours of daylight at midsummer) and quiet lakes before the Swedish holidays; August has the warmest water and fewer people once Swedish schools go back. July is the busiest and dearest month, and most rental bases and packages run from mid-May to mid-September.

Värmland’s canoe season is short and bright. Lakes are usually free of ice by May, the main rental season runs to mid-September, and in between the month you choose changes the water, the light, the insects and how many other canoes you meet.

Month by month

Daylight is for Årjäng, sunrise to sunset on the 15th of each month (21 June for midsummer), worked out from its latitude. Water temperature varies a lot by lake and by year, so treat that column as a guide.

Month Water Daylight Mosquitoes Crowds Notes
May Cold, a capsize is serious About 17 h Few early, building late in the month Very quiet Some bases and packages only open mid-May
June Cool, warming through the month About 18.5 h at midsummer Often at their peak after a wet spring Quiet until midsummer, then busier Midsummer Eve is Friday 25 June 2027
July Warm enough to swim About 18 h Present, less in dry spells Busiest; Swedish holiday peak Highest prices; book early
August Warmest of the year About 15.5 h Fading Drops off from mid-August Dark nights return, good for stars
September Cooling About 12.5 h Few Very quiet Most rentals close mid-September

Water temperature

Lakes warm up much more slowly than the air. SMHI, the Swedish weather service, notes that August is usually when the water is at its most pleasant, because water takes longer to heat than land. In May and early June the lakes are still cold enough that a capsize far from shore is a real risk: wear your buoyancy aid, stay close to land on big crossings and keep dry clothes in a sealed bag.

Daylight

At this latitude the sun sets after 22:00 around midsummer and it never gets fully dark. Long evenings give you time to paddle after a slow start or a windy afternoon. By September the days are close to 12 hours, which still leaves plenty of time for a 15 km day.

Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes depend on the weather more than the calendar. Vildmark i Värmland, which runs canoe and raft trips on the Klarälven, says there are always mosquitoes, and a big spring flood followed by heat brings more. They are mostly a problem on land in the evening and rarely bother you out on open water. Pick island campsites with a breeze, bring repellent and long sleeves, and choose a tent with a good inner mesh.

Crowds and the Swedish holiday

Swedish summer holidays cluster in July. You can see it in the prices: Vildmark i Värmland’s 2027 packages cost more from 14 July to 9 August than in June or late August. In the lake district this means more canoes, and the popular island campsites fill earlier in the afternoon. Camping sites in the Dalsland–Nordmarken system cannot be reserved, so in July plan to stop by mid-afternoon or carry a backup option.

Midsummer weekend (Friday 25 June to Sunday 27 June in 2027) is a big holiday in Sweden. Many shops keep shorter hours, and many Swedes head to the lakes for those days.

Fire rules change with the season

Fire rules get stricter as summer goes on. On the rest areas of the Dalsland–Nordmarken lake system, fires are allowed only in the fixed fireplaces from 1 June to 31 August. In Glaskogen nature reserve, open fires are only allowed at the marked fire sites from 15 April to 15 September. On top of that, the County Administrative Board of Värmland can declare a fire ban in dry spells, which can rule out fires everywhere. Bring a camping stove and check the Brandrisk Ute app before each trip. More in where you can wild camp in Värmland.

When to book

  • Lake trips: Most rental bases in the lake district open in May and run to mid-September. For July, book canoes and huts in winter or early spring.
  • The Klarälven: Vildmark i Värmland’s canoe packages run from 20 June to 22 August 2027, and its raft trips from 2 June to 25 August. See whether to raft or canoe the Klarälven.
  • Packages: The Canoe Trip, a self-guided 8-day trip in Nordmarken, runs from mid-May to mid-September, with starts on Sundays and Thursdays. Bookings for 2027 open on 12 November 2026.

Where we would start

For a trip in June or August, we would start at Outpost North in Gustavsfors, on the Dalsland side of the Värmland border. From its shore you reach both Lelång and Västra Silen, so if the wind picks up on one lake you can switch to the other without a transfer. Huts, a sauna and a wood-fired hot tub make a cold May or September evening easier. Its canoe packages run from 1 May to 12 October 2027 and start on any day you choose. A canoe costs €80 a day in May, €95 in June, €115 from 1 July to 13 August, €95 again until 1 September and €85 after that.
