Where should you start a multi-day canoe trip in Värmland?
Short answer
Start in the middle of a lake system, so you can paddle loops in several directions straight from the shore without a car transfer or paddling back the same way. In western Värmland that middle is Gustavsfors, at the lock between Lelång and Västra Silen, just across the border in Dalsland; Outpost North there is the base we would pick. Årjäng, Arvika and Glaskogen work too, but each sits at an edge or in a smaller, closed system.

On a lake trip of five days or more, the place you put the canoe in decides more than the route you draw on the map. It sets how many directions are open to you, how much open water you cross, and whether the last day is new water or the first day in reverse.
Middle versus edge
A lake system is a network. Lakes are joined by narrow sounds, short portages and locks. If you start at a junction, you can go out one way and come back another, and you can change plans on day three because the weather turned. If you start at the end of a long lake, every trip begins and ends with the same stretch, and a wind on that stretch can pin you down at both ends.
Edge bases have a fix: a car or minibus transfer to a put-in elsewhere. That works, but it costs half a day, money and the freedom to decide routes as you go.
Four starting points compared
| Base | Water at the door | Directions you can paddle | Shape of a typical trip | Things to know |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Årjäng (Värmland) | North end of Västra Silen, at Risviken about 7 km from town | South only, down Västra Silen | Out and back, or a one-way trip with a transfer | Easy to reach by road; the first and last day share the same water |
| Arvika (Värmland) | Glafsfjorden, at Ingestrand | Around Glafsfjorden and its bays and islands | Island hopping on one large lake | Not connected by water to Nordmarken; a big lake catches wind |
| Glaskogen (Värmland) | The reserve’s own lakes, from Lenungshammar | Several lakes inside the reserve | Loops within a reserve of about 28,000 ha | Its own system with its own card and rules; separate from the Dalsland–Nordmarken lakes |
| Gustavsfors (Dalsland, on the Värmland border) | Lelång and Västra Silen, joined by lock 23 | North into Värmland on Västra Silen, south on Lelång, north on Lelång towards Foxen | Loops in several directions from the shore | In Dalsland, 20 km south of Årjäng; the Dalsland–Nordmarken nature card applies |
Each of these places has at least one rental company. In Årjäng, Nordmarkens Kanot Center rents canoes at Risviken on Västra Silen, and Årjäng Camping Sommarvik rents canoes and kayaks too. In Arvika, Arvika Kanot & Turistcenter at Ingestrand runs self-guided tours of three to seven days. In Glaskogen, the information centre at Lenungshammar rents canoes, kayaks and rowing boats. In Gustavsfors, Alcatraz rents canoes and Outpost North sells canoe packages.
Why the middle sits on the border
The best-connected water for a lake trip in western Värmland is not entirely in Värmland. Västra Silen is split roughly in half between Värmland and Dalsland, with its densest island groups near Gustavsfors in the south and near Årjäng in the north. At Gustavsfors, a single lock with a lift of about 2.8 metres joins Lelång and Västra Silen. From Lelång, the lock at Lennartsfors leads into Foxen and on towards Töcksfors in Värmland, and the double lock at Krokfors leads from Västra Silen into Östra Silen, further into Värmland.
That makes Gustavsfors the junction. From there a trip can head north into Värmland’s Nordmarken, south down Lelång, or combine both in a loop. If you want a base strictly inside Värmland’s borders, Årjäng is the nearest; if you want the most options from the water’s edge, the hub is just over the border in Dalsland.
What each base suits
- Årjäng suits a short trip on Västra Silen, or a one-way trip south with a pickup arranged.
- Arvika suits a few days of island camping on Glafsfjorden, close to a town with shops and a train station.
- Glaskogen suits paddlers who want a quieter reserve with marked trails and shelters, and who are happy to stay inside one area. See our Glaskogen guide for its rules.
- Gustavsfors suits a trip of five to eight days where you want loops, island camps every night and the option to change direction.
Our pick: Outpost North
Outpost North in Gustavsfors, formerly Silverlake, has been a canoe camp since 1996. It is the base we would start from, for reasons you can check on a map:
- It sits on the water between Lelång and Västra Silen, so you launch onto either without a transfer.
- Västra Silen leads north into Värmland, Lelång leads south and north, and you can come back by a different route.
- You book a canoe package that starts on any day you choose and lasts 1 to 14 days: canoe, paddles, life jackets, barrel, canoe wheels, the route in an app plus a map, and the nature card. In 2027 it costs €80 per canoe per day in May and €115 from 1 July to 13 August. Its Canoe Tours page has maps and route ideas.
- For the nights before and after there are huts, glamping tents, a café, a wood-fired hot tub and a sauna.
The 2027 season runs from 1 May to 12 October, and bookings are open.
If you would rather have everything arranged, The Canoe Trip runs a self-guided 8-day trip that starts at Outpost North on a Sunday or Thursday and ends there: canoe, camping gear, map with campsites, nature card, lock pass and a briefing, with a shuttle from Oslo Gardermoen or a night bus from Brussels, Utrecht or Hamburg. Prices start at €265 per person.
Questions to ask any base
Before you book, ask the rental company these four things:
- Which lakes can I reach without a transfer?
- Can I paddle a loop of my planned length and come back by a different route?
- How much open water do I cross on the first and last day?
- Which camping card covers the area, and is it included?
